Cameron Martin: Standstill
March 20 – April 20, 2002
Reception March 20, 6-8 PM

Artemis Greenberg Van Doren Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Cameron Martin, on view from March 20 – April 20, 2002. Standstill is the artist’s first one-person exhibition at the gallery. Martin was awarded the Giverny Residency (one of three fellows the program awards each year), spending this past summer in Claude Monet’s studio, and is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award.

Martin’s subtle and rich paintings of three series - rocks, trees and water - form a concentrated project which suggests landscape as a type of cultural reflection. Inspired by the backgrounds in advertising and stock photography, Martin isolates simple forms suggesting natural settings as contemporary pop icons and common nostalgic experiences. The paintings are medium specific as Martin uses different materials and techniques to define each of the different images. The 7 x 9 foot painting, Untitled (100), the largest work in the show, demonstrates Martin’s confidence, as the impervious rocks settle over the predominantly empty shimmery surface of the large canvas. A smaller painting, Untitled (106) depicts a velvety cluster of knarled rocks with the golden sparse skyline begging the question of what lies behind the rugged mound.

Each of the three large tree paintings, white fragmented trunks speckled with black flecks which contrast and float against their monochromatic background, intentionally present different perspectives of similar imagery to create varying psychological perceptions. In Standstill, the traditional verticality of the tree is turned and we are given a side view as a singular branch horizontally crosses the canvas. In Forecast, we are confronted with the severe perpendicular relationship between two stalking trunks and in Ersatz, the trunk and its branches seem to climb further back than the canvas allows.

Pure Phase Two and Loss Leader are two related paintings based on the skyline meeting the water’s edge. Identical subjects, the differences of the two paintings is pronounced through painterly techniques such as the gradations of color, sense of depth and the change in the light source as the water seems to float unconsciously over the canvas. Along with eight new large works on canvas, the exhibition will also include several small studies that forecast the larger canvases.

Cameron Martin was born 1970 in Seattle, WA, and lives and works in Brooklyn. He studied at Brown University and the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. The accompanying catalogue reproduces work from the exhibition with a text by curator, writer and artist, Dike Blair.
