Benjamin Edwards: Convergence

September 7 – October 6, 2001

Artemis Greenberg Van Doren Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Benjamin Edwards, on view from September 7 - October 6, 2001. Titled Convergence, this is the artist’s first one-person exhibition. Edwards’ work was last featured in Greater New York at P.S.1 / MoMA in Spring 2000.

Edwards’ highly conceptual paintings depict massive conglomerates of actual convenience stores, fast food restaurants, franchise stores, and gas stations. Each painting is based on a carefully conceived road-trip that the artist has taken. On these trips, he logs and takes snapshots of selected consumer locations. With these collected images and logs, he devises a system to structure the information into a painting.

Included in the exhibition are two spectacularly dense paintings – Convergence and Decoherence. The former is comprised of elements from approximately 250 consumer locations from the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The latter painting ambitiously layers details from the more than 1,000 sites that the artist visited in the last 2-1/2 years, including trips to California, New Jersey, and Washington D.C.

Fill (Dump Retrieval), Dump (Edge Refuse), and Edge are three related paintings based on a road trip the artist took in March 2001. Edwards plotted a route based on the outermost edge of Los Angeles and photographed over 400 locations, including office parks and chain stores. In Edge, the artist painted from the center of the painting progressing towards the edge. However, each time he added elements to the edge, he erased a section of the middle. Dump (Edge Refuse) and Fill (Dump Retrieval) features the elements taken out of Edge.

Also included in the exhibition is Valulink, a 9 x 18 feet work (archival inks on vinyl) that is composed entirely from elements from consumer (on-line shopping) web-sites from the internet.

Benjamin Edwards was born 1970 in Iowa City, IA, and lives and works in NY. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design (M.F.A.), the San Francisco Art Institute, and UCLA (B.A.). The accompanying catalogue-artist book reproduces work from the exhibition, detailed maps from the artist’s trips, and travel logs.
