This exhibition examines and reflects on modern and post-modern architecture through painting, sculpture, and digital photography. Though the show is slanted towards ‘conceptual pop’ (Peter Halley, Julian Opie, Benjamin Edwards), more romantic works will be presented in the work of Peter Doig and Torbjorn Vejvi.
Peter Doig
Two untitled works on paper that depict the same Le Corbusier interior.
Benjamin Edwards
New paintings which propose hybrid franchise architecture. Spicy Toys, 1999, is a composite of Taco Bell and Toys-R-Us, while Competing Notions of Seafood, 1999, morphs a Red Lobster with Long John Silver’s.
Miltos Manetas
Unique Vibracolor prints of interiors culled and manipulated from popular adolescent computer games.
Julian Opie
A walldrawing, Modern Building, 1996, of an office facade seen in perspective, with two sculptural elements, Modern Tower II and Modern Tower III, both from 1999.
Torbjorn Vejvi
Two cardboard box and foam-core sculptures, both Untitled, 1999. The first depicts a dog and a boy facing off across a closed hallway, while the second is a revisionist transformation of an athletic stadium.
Also included in the exhibition are paintings by Jeff Gauntt, Julie Mehretu, Alejandra Seeber, and Dan Walsh.
