Valeska Soares

Valeska Soares was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and lives and works in New York City. Soares’ work explores the often complex relationship between how we perceive, experience, and record time, and how this plays out in our collective / individual memory. Soares uses found and collected objects such as book pages and domestic items in her sculptures and installations re-casting their individual past identities and subverting their original use. Soares lends a sense of theatricality to a minimalist aesthetic language that includes elements of serialization and repetition within three-dimensional space. Her work was included in the 2008 Bienal Internacional de São Paulo and has been exhibited extensively in South America, Central America, the United States, and Europe. Her work is included in the collections of CAC, Centro de Arte Contemporánea, Malaga, Spain, Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C., MAM, Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, MAC, Museu de Arte Contemporânea, São Paulo, Brazil, Solomon Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY and Tate Modern, London, UK.
