Julia Kunin lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Kunin’s ceramic sculptures are composed of elements from the natural world such as insects, shells and rock formations where figure and landscape merge. Kunin’s complex baroque structures are glazed in exquisite and unique lusters. Ornate and jewel toned, the ornamental quality of Kunin’s ceramic work belie the fact that they address serious ideas about beauty and decay, sensuality, nature and death. Her work has been widely exhibited in the United States and Europe. In 2002, the Deutches Leder Museum in Offenbach, Germany mounted a solo exhibition of her work. Kunin has participated in a number of fellowships and residencies including, The Trust for Mutual Understanding travel grant in 2010, the 2008 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, The John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry Residency, Sheboygan, WI in 2007, and The MacDowell Colony Artist Residency in Peterborough, NH in 2006.
