Eva Lundsager
New Paintings and Works on Paper
January 8 - February 7, 2009

Greenberg Van Doren is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by the artist Eva Lundsager, on view from January 8 - February 7, 2009. This body of work was previously on view at Greenberg Van Doren Gallery in St. Louis from October 23 - December 12, 2008, before traveling to New York. Two publications were produced on the occasion of the show. The first is a Greenberg Van Doren full color catalogue, featuring an essay by Joseph R. Wolin. Additionally, Regency Arts Press has published a book on Lundsager’s watercolors from the Ascendosphere series.

In this series, Lundsager continues to explore the realm between abstraction and landscape. The controlled chaos seen in her previous work has taken on more atmospheric allusions through deeper hues, intensities, and gestural embellishments, and the paintings are ripe with associations both natural and fantastical. Though the work flirts with the representational, Lundsager's forceful brushwork and rotation of the picture plane deny a true objective meaning. Wolin writes:

"Lundsager's art is an art of simile, of likeness, although resemblances remain stubbornly allusive, not representational. And those allusions tend to be restless, shifting, multivalent. Painted episodes in her canvases usually invoke, by analogy, several things at the same time, from the realms of both the observed and the metaphorical. This also holds true for each painting as a whole."

Eva Lundsager was born in 1960 in Buffalo, NY and currently lives and works in St. Louis, MO. She received her B.A. from the University of Maryland and an M.F.A. from Hunter College, NY. She is a recipient of a Penny McCall Foundation Grant and a Guggenheim Fellowship in painting.
